Rules and Regulation Requirements to marry in Cyprus

 

If you are thinking of getting married abroad, Under the provisions of the Cyprus Marriage Law Cap. 279 you must apply personally to the marriage officer at the Town Hall For either - a date for the marriage to take place after the lapse of 15 days from the date of the application of notice or until the expiration of three months from the date of the notice or in urgent or time sensitive applications, a special license for implementation after 3 days may be obtained. You must have       -------------------------------------------- 

Documents..... legal identification or travel documents, such as passports. You also must be in possession of evidence that you are free to marry, such as a confirmation from the competent authority of your country
 (i.e. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

In other words you must have a signed, stamped paper saying that you are not already married, and this document must be new and fresh, no more than 3 months old in our experience, on the day you wish to wed. Sometimes you can get it from your Embassy or from the court, depending upon your nationality and certain other parameters, if they allow you to sign an affidavit they will stamp it for you. That is the easiest route to follow, but to be on the safe side, please find out before you come to Cyprus.

All documents regarding legal divorce, certificates in cases of divorces, certificates of widowhood etc, must be duly certified by a competent authority of your country (i.e. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a licensed attorney, solicitor, or notary etc.) as a true and valid document for the period of the application for civil marriage in Cyprus.

So to recap - make sure you have

1. Certificate of No impediment of Marriage (each country has a different department that can provide this certificate) not more than 3 months old
2. Birth Certificates
3. Passports
4. Decree Absolute, (if applicable, i.e. you are divorced)
5. Death Certificate of your spouse, in the case of widows or widowers.

Marriage of persons under 18          ---------------------------- 

If either party of the intended marriage is under 18 years of age and is not a widow or a widower, he or she needs the written consent of the father, or if he is dead or incapable of consenting, the written consent of the mother. If both are dead or incapable of consenting, then the lawful guardian of such party must give written consent to the Marriage Officer before a Marriage Certificate may be issued.

If you need to get married urgently but only have a limited amount of time that you can be in Cyprus for your wedding, we do offer an express marriage service.
If you wish to avail yourself of this express service, please contact us explaining your time constrictions and the reason for such constraints. We will tell you, by return, if you qualify. There is an extra charge for this service, as there is if you need witnesses, which we can of course supply.

Pre nuptial appointment

If you feel at all nervous about your pre marriage appointment, we can accompany you and lead you through the process, having explained the procedure in full. Your appointment will be firmed up as soon as we have booked your wedding date, unlike many of the larger companies and tour operators, we will always give you a firm time for both your marriage and your pre nuptial appointment. We will check all your documents before your arrival, thereby avoiding any nasty little surprises or oversights. Please be aware that the documentation required from you may vary according to your nationality and circumstances.

Depending on the location of your wedding and the municipality or denomination of your actual wedding ceremony, we may require extra documentation other than that mentioned above. Please contact us for full details.

If you intend to get married in 2025 or 2026 it is not too early to start making the arrangements, however please be aware that documents of no impediment must not be older than 3 months on the day of your wedding, so do not get such certificates before you have to.

We will of course help you with whatever stamps, frills and whistles said departments require of you for a nominal fee.
